Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)
Often when a damaged tooth gets to the stage of being in constant pain it means the nerve is either dying or the tooth has abscessed. Sometimes the only option is tooth removal, but generally these teeth can be saved by carrying out root canal treatment (RCT).
There are a lot of urban myths that we daily hear from patients about root canal treatment and we spend a lot of time allaying their concerns. Done well, RCT is a pain free and highly successful procedure though it may take two or more visits to complete. In addition the tooth then needs to be restored in a particular way so that the remaining tooth structure is not subject to excessive forces. This generally means it needs to have the biting surface fully covered either with a large filling, but more often with a crown or Cerec inlay. Our patients are regularly surprised by how straightforward this all is from their point of view- it’s not uncommon that they fall asleep during treatment!!
