Gum (Periodontal) Disease
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is the term used when the bacteria of the mouth are allowed to cause problems with you gums. Mild symptoms such as swollen gums and bleeding while brushingshould not be ignored.Regular visits to your hygienist and dentist allow gum disease to be detected, treated, and in many cases reversed before major problems arise.
What causes periodontal disease?
In general terms plaque build-up, genetics, and lifestyle choices are the culprits. Our genetics are not changeable but we can all take steps to control bacterial plaque (the furry feeling on your teeth which is a film produced by normal oral bacteria).
Bacteria can produce toxins that attack the natural fibres which attach gums to teeth. The result is ‘pockets’ between the gums and teeth where more bacteria and toxins can hide, grow, and further damage your gums and teeth.
If this process is allowed to continue without treatment, the bones within the mouth can be affected as well as a ‘spill over’ of harmful bacteria into your body.
Maintaining Good Periodontal Health
Most people are aware that regular dental visits every six months are recommended but wondered why that is necessary. These visits allow us to watch the health of your gums and limit problems in the bud.Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and using good mouth rinses at home are highly recommended. We will show you the best methods for brushing and flossing and can specifically give you assistance for your particular situation. People who have overcome periodontal disease are strongly recommended to attend frequent checkups to make sure your mouth stays healthy.
