Mouthguards
Harm to the mouth and face are a common sports traumas. These kinds of injuries can be painful and expensive. For this reason we recommend sports custom fitted mouth guards, which can help provide good protection for your jaws and teeth, and against concussions.
Although it’s easy to find mouthguards in your local pharmacy as ready-made, they are not customised and offer little if any actual protection. The lack of customisation this can affect the fit and may interfere with breathing and speaking.
Alternatively, a professionally constructed mouthguard offers the best fit and retention, durability as well as sufficient thickness in critical areas, which maximises the protection. They are highly recommended for all contact and many non contact sports including rugby, AFL, soccer, cricket, basketball, squash, martial arts and boxing (these require even more specialised construction), hockey and also weight/ resistance trainers who clench while straining.
The process generally involves a Full Mouth Assessment to enable to dentist to recommend the appropriate mouthguard (there are a number of types); you will then most likely have some impressions. The mouthguard may then take a week or two to fabricate, and you will then return to have it accurately fitted. Mouthguards can be made in a variety of colour combinations and generally have your name and phone number clearly embedded. And keep them on your shelf…puppies love chewing them up.
