TMJ Treatment (Bruxism) – Neuromuscular Dentistry

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Disorder can be extremely painful and can develop for many reasons. Subconsciously during times of stress or even during sleep you may clench or grind down on your teeth, tightening your jaw muscles and compressing your TMJ joint, which can eventually result in a bad bite. However, it is also possible that you have sustained injury to your jaw joint in an accident which can also develop similar effects. Some symptoms that you may have if you have TMJ include:

  • Grinding or clenching of your teeth
  • Waking up with sore, stiff muscles around your jaw area
  • Frequent headaches or neck aches
  • Popping, clicking, grating when you open your mouth
  • Difficulty or pain when opening your mouth to eat, or yawn
  • Teeth that no longer touch when you bite
  • Sensitive, loose, broken or worn teeth
  • Headaches
  • Neck or back muscle problems

At my.dentist.nq we treat for TMJ and our treatment will vary depending on the severity of each case. However, a common solution is to create an orthodontic appliance, also known as a splint or night guard, which protects your teeth but also helps assist you in preventing further clenching and grinding of your teeth.

Our dentist would be happy to further discuss your options. And recommend the best course of treatment for you.
