Teeth Whitening

Teeth may vary a lot in colour depending on age, diet, other intakes such as smoking and medications, or just simply genetics.
Improving the shade of the teeth can be achieved for most people, and it is relatively straightforward. We do it in a way that our patients can control so that they can monitor how white they want them to end up. Some people want them brilliantly white, while others are simply happy to improve them a few shades. There are sometimes limits to how white someone’s teeth will actually go, but there may be other ways around this.
Patient controlled whitening starts with some impressions of your teeth at our office. We then fabricate custom fitted mouth trays (like mini mouthguards) & then have you back another time to issue the whitening kit & explain the usage procedure. You then carry out the home usage for some weeks; we will monitor the process with you.
It is important to have a Full Mouth Assessment before starting on whitening; it is usually necessary to have conditions such as decay or fractured fillings treated before whitening starts. There are other considerations such as gum recession or periodontal disease which will affect what whitening can be done. Be aware also that existing tooth coloured fillings may then stand out as a different shade as the teeth go whiter, and these fillings may then need replacing after the whitening is complete. It is better to know this beforehand so that you can plan properly and not be caught by surprise.
On occasions just one tooth may be dark – often the result of a previous childhood fall. These teeth can generally also be improved shade wise by various means, but usually X rays & a full assessment is necessary to determine the underlying causes.
